On the way to the exciting penguins, the tour stopped at this strange
tourist trap/petting zoo. It was called the Giant Worm Museum, or some such,
and it had this bizarre, bad-smelling exhibit in a building
shaped like a giant worm which was, oddly enough, about giant worms.
There was also a preserved shark, but I don't think we were even supposed
to be going into that part.
As far as I remember, the petting zoo was actually a place
to care for rescued animals, but as tourist attractions go, it had all the
cheesiness of the Corn Palace in South Dakota.
The part of the petting zoo that was cool, though, was getting to pet a
baby wombat! Yeah, yeah, they're mean when they grow up, but this one was
half-asleep and not that grumpy. We then went
and harassed the resident kangaroos; Christian got some cool pictures of them,
but only by tricking them into thinking he had food. He also got some closeups
of the koalas. After the tour of the giant worm, we got back on to the bus,
ate more Fishermen's Friends, and rode off to Phillip Island to the
Koala Conservation Center (which was not cheesy and seemed a lot more... um...
legitimate than Wally's Worm Wonderland).
Note: As I mentioned, Rob, the new owner of the worm place,
informed me via e-mail that the new management is cleaning the place
up, finding proper care for the animals, etc. So don't judge the current
place by what I say here.
These (click here) are the pictures from the afternoon.
