I spent most of my summer in Germany, learning German. While I love
speaking Dutch (I think it's still my favorite language), speaking
German is a lot more practical for me, especially since I'm marrying
a German. I spent a large portion of the summer in Düsseldorf staying
with a guest family while taking an intensive German course at the
Institut für Internationale Kommunikation
at the Heinrich-Heine Universität in Düsseldorf. The experience
was great - I loved the class and the people - and I really had a great
time in Germany. I can even speak German with the in-laws, which makes
life much easier! The only real downside to the trip was that in the
last few days of the course, the host family left Meliha (my Bosnian
housemate who was also taking courses at the Institute) and I alone
with their 19-year-old daughter, who was, let us say, far less than pleasant
to the two of us, but otherwise, they were a really great family and I had
a lot of fun.
There are pictures here from my life in Düsseldorf and from the German course,
as well as pictures of my trips down the Rhine to Bacharach and St. Goar, and
to Munich on my last few days there.
