Sankt Goar is another little village along the Rhine, topped off by
Burg Rheinfels above the town. I'll admit I went there to see the castle
ruins, which warrant hours of exploring, but the return of the pouring rain
(and I do mean pouring!) led to me walking back down the steep climb
to the castle and into a little tea shop to wait out the rain for the next
train to Bacharach. The castle ruins, however, are awesome. Just don't forget
a map and flashlight! While the map given by the gatekeeper is decent, the
guided tour in Rick Steves' guidebook is much better. In good news, I'd read
the whole tour a couple of times in the guidebook, so I knew what to look
forward to. In bad news, I forgot the guidebook at the hostel (and had no flashlight!),
so I ended up doing quite a bit of unguided wandering which ended up with me at the
entrance to a pitch-black enclosure (which sounded huge) which could have been
anything, and freaked me out rather seriously, so I turned back. But it's a
pretty town, and the castle is great to explore - I think after this one, I'm
castled out!
