These pictures were taken in Lafayette when the Wabash River flooded in
mid-July, 2003. Apartment complexes along River Road in West Lafayette
were flooded, and the waters were almost up to where the train platform
is on the Lafayette side (normally, the water is several meters below it).
The floods crested at 25.05 feet, a near-major flood, around the time these
pictures were taken - this was the highest the river had been in 44 years.
Note that flood stage begins at 11 feet, so this was pretty impressive.
Unfortunately, the weather sucked, making the pictures dark and nasty, and my
camera was on its last legs as well. Still, I think some of the pictures are
interesting, particularly if you happen to be someone who lives in Lafayette
and takes the pedestrian bridge often!
The pictures shown for comparison were taken in October, 2004, with water
levels at around 2 feet. If you want to see information about the Wabash at
Lafayette, including flood stage information and current river levels,
see the National
Weather Service page on the subject.
