Christian laughs at the American claim of separation of church and
state due to the fact that a church marriage in the U.S. can be a
secularly valid one. It doesn't work that way in Germany.
So Christian and I got married at the Rathaus (City Hall) in his
hometown of Wuppertal. We really had no idea what to expect!
Christian spent the night before the wedding at his parents'
place, ostensibly to get some rest and have Internet access.
His real plan was much more sinister!!
I showed up at the city hall with Christian's lovely aunt, sister and
grandmother to find a beardless man of about
Christian's height standing there wearing a suit jacket.
Christian had promised me I'd see him once in his life without
a beard, and this was apparently it. I could not stop
staring at him!!! If he hadn't been wearing sandals with the ensemble, I wouldn't have
believed it was him!!!
